AI search

Search is splitting into links and answers. Plan for both.

May 14, 2026 · 6 min read

For two decades, search meant a page of links. That is still true, but it is no longer the whole story. More and more queries are answered directly by AI, sometimes before a single link is clicked, and the question for brands has shifted from 'do we rank' to 'are we cited'.

The instinct is to treat this as a second discipline to learn. It is not, mostly. A direct answer near the top of a section, genuine information gain, clean structure, and clear signals of trust are exactly what wins featured snippets and exactly what AI engines quote.

So you do not have to choose. Build content for the searcher and the answer engine at the same time, and you compound your odds in both.
